Digital PR – Twitter usage problems

Twitter – we’ve all heard about it but apparently many of us don’t use it.

According to recent figures Twitter usage remains a niche activity. The Pew Internet & American Life Project announced this month that Twitter usage had risen from 8% of US internet users in autumn 2010 to 13% in May 2011, a 62.5% increase in penetration.

Awareness of the micro blogging service was high, at 92%, but just 8% of consumers ages 12 and over said they had ever used it.

Food PR – Discounters make progress

Discounters are making progress as the ‘two nations’ retail effect continues according to the latest grocery share figures.

Most notably it is the continental discounters and the premium retailers who are performing best leaving the remaining retailers feeling the pressure.

Food PR - Supermarket discounters make progress

The Kantar Worldpanel statistics for the 12 weeks ending 12 June 2011 show the grocery market growing at 4.7% per year.  However this conceals the sharp slow-down that was expected after the Royal Wedding and Easter boost.

Growth for the four weeks ending 15 May 2011 was 7.8% but this has slumped to 2.5% for the latest four weeks.

It was a busy weekend of cycling for Pelican PR’s specialist sport and outdoor pursuits team as they masterminded the PR effort for British Cycling’s National Road Race.

Sky Pro Cycling rider and British Tour de France hopeful Bradley Wiggins took victory in Sunday’s (26 June) men’s Elite Road Race Championships, whilst the earlier women’s race was won by Garmin-Cervélo rider Lizzie Armitstead.

Digital PR – Failing Facebook

One in five British Facebook users is currently considering deactivating their account according to a poll by YouGov.

The results show that of those contemplating logging out for the last time, more than half are doing so because they’re bored with the website’s service, while over a third have revealed that they are concerned by intrusive privacy settings.

Food PR – Discounter revival rolls on into February

The continuing revival of the discounters in 2011 has been confirmed by the latest monthly figures from Kantar Worldpanel.

According to a report in The Grocer, Aldi grew its market share in the three months to 20 February from 2.8% to 3.1%, new data shows, while Lidl boosted its share from 2.2% to 2.4%.

At the upper end of the market, Waitrose achieved its highest ever ranking, with market share of 4.4% for the period.

Sainsbury’s grew its share from 16.3% to 16.5%. That narrowed the gap to Asda in second place, whose share slipped slightly to 16.9%. And Tesco lost share, down 0.1 percentage points to 30.3% of the UK grocery market.

Recycling PR – Pelican gets wasted

Pelican’s specialist recycling PR team have been chosen to promote the UK’s biggest waste and sustainability event the Recycling and Waste Management exhibition (RWM).

Private label gets a quality reputation

With consumers counting every penny, brands need to be looking over their shoulder as private label is rapidly catching-up says new US research.

According to Mintel private label companies continue to introduce better-for-you products and more attractive packaging, whilst being easier on consumers’ pockets. Their efforts seem to be working. The research company found that 44% of American grocery shoppers believe store brand products are of better quality today than they were five years ago. Read the rest of this entry »

At Pelican PR we believe it’s good news for the PR industry that the Office of Fair Trading has announced that it will take action against celebrities who plug brands online without revealing they are getting paid for the endorsement.
